Ye Olde
Postecards
This is one of the old favourites
looking down "The Butt" towards St Peter's Church, Onchan.
The card is postmarked, 24th August 1912, but the actual photograph was
taken much earlier by the dress of the women walking up towards the main
road.
This unfortunately is my only copy of this wonderful shot at the turn of
the last Century
For those who are not aware, St Peter's Church was where Captain Bligh, of
the Bounty Mutiny, was married to a local girl. The original church building
was demolished in 1833 to make way for the present building.
As far as I can make out this is the text of the message:-
To Miss M A Coltman, 74
Danvers Road, Marlborough Rd, Leicester, Eng.
Dear Daughter,
We are getting to the tail end of our holiday; Soon have to pack up and get
ready for home. We had it wet all day yesterday and the weather still holds
very cold. Your mother says she will be glad to get home again.
There are plenty of people here but still they keep coming and going as
normal.
We start very early on Monday for the boat. Hope we shall have a nice
passage.
Hoping to see you all soon, From your loving Mar & Par.
